In 2006, the San Francisco City Council passed a resolution that declared November 14, "Stoney, A Clown Who Rabble Rouses In Defense of Free Speech, Day." Stoney Burke has stood in the main plaza at UC Berkeley since 1977, with star-spangled hightops and clown pants, ranting to a mass of students gathered in a circle. He's been arrested more times than he can remember and most people think he is a homeless loon: he's actually a trained actor and there is a method to his madness. Does Stoney still believe young people can be reached by grass roots free speech?
