RECYCLING IN JERSEY
Here?s a story that demonstrates how the amount we recycle dramatically increases when the process is made easier for consumers:
Omni Recycling serves 44 townships in southern New Jersey. They recently converted their recycling facility to ?single-stream,? a term referring to the practice of homeowners putting all their recyclable materials into only one bin for curbside pickup. Previously, they had to separate the ?wets? (the bottles and cans) from the ?dries? (the paper and cardboard).
Omni is seeing a 35 to 40 percent increase in the two months following the switch ? a figure that the owner says is ?only going to grow.?
When consumers don?t have to take the extra step of separating out their cans, bottles, and paper, it seems they?ll lug more of them ? a lot more of them -- out to the curbside bin....
