Many area businesses are fearful that next week's Republican National Convention will amount to an obstacle course for operations in midtown. Others are confident it will be good for profits. And some don't need to guess - advanced bookings already paint a pretty clear picture of the impact of the RNC for them. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.

Review of Ice Sculpture Bonanza
This is a fun and informative portrait of how a national event affects the financial well being of a city. It's interesting but not surprising that the security industry is the one business that is flourishing during the RNC. And what does it say about our culture that the other prospective hit of the week will be the Pedicab? It's also amusing that one of the scheduled activities for the convention is a scavenger hunt (hey--what will they be looking for? Weapons of mass destruction?). Of course this piece should be broadcast during the RNC on All things Considered or Morning Edition. Nonetheless you could probably use this locally the next time your town is gearing up for a big event. There are enough truths about the laws of supply and demand to use this after the convention.
