In December 2003, I donated my liver to a good friend. It wasn't supposed to be me in the beginning. I was just a bystander to tragedy in the making. This is the story of my friend's illness, and the events and religious practices that conspired to really make my mother angry and put me in the place of giving my friend two-thirds of my liver. The first person narrative is filled out with interviews of sick people, the sisters of sick people, the lamas who tend to the spiritual guidance of sick people, and the mother of the donor.
This piece could not have been produced without the technical and emotional support of the following people: Robin Wise, Milt Wallace, Gabriel Roth, Dorothy Russo, Anna Brown Griswold, Belinda Griswold, Corey Cohen, Scott Moulton, Jewel Moulthrop, William Moulthrop, Peter Moulthrop, Robert Moulthrop, Chris Beaver, Ninive Clements Calegari, Jean Claude Calegarai, Pon Lop Rinpoche, his Holiness the Karmapa, and the Liver Transplant Team at UCSF.
It was produced as part of my studies at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.

Review of His Holiness the Karmapa and meI enjoyed this piece mainly because of the involvement of the Karmapa and how he shapes the progress of an otherwise simple story. This piece shines brightest during the narrator's insights on faith, and during the interview segments. I would like to hear this piece on the radio because I believe it is both interesting and professionally produced. I enjoy human interst pieces, and "His Holiness" is a very personal and engaging story that goes straight for your ticker. |

Music: “Bewilderbeast 1” Badly Drawn Boy
The year I turned 30 was a big year for me. I was living alone for the first time in my life. I gave up a steady job to go to graduate school. And, that December, I was a liver donor.
It came about in a strange way. It’s a story about a young woman with a rare disease and sisters who love each other very much.
It’s a story about modern medicine, faith, and gratitude. And it’s a story that involves an eighteen year old Tibetan Buddhist who has been reincarnated seventeen times. People believe he can see the future, and if it wasn’t for this fact, I might never have donated my liver.
Music “Bewilderbeast 2” Badly Drawn Boy
I should start with my friend, Anna Brown. She’s the one with the rare disease. It’s called PSC—Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis—which basically means there was a scarring inside her liver that leads to infection. Do...

Review of His Holiness the Karmapa and me
I enjoyed how this piece follows the author's transformation pre and post transplant. The texture of his voice changed over the course of the piece. The best part is when he compares the Karmapa to the X men to the Buddhist teacher!
