The Beat Goes On - part 4
Series: The Beat Goes On - "On the Road" at 50
From: 90.9 WBUR - Boston's NPR News Station
Length: 00:08:40
Fifty years after the publication of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," the definitive novel of the Beat Generation still enthralls readers with its call to the road. Charles Sennott of The Boston Globe heard the invitation for the second time in his life, and took it, retracing Kerouac's path across America.
Part four begins with Sennott trying his hand at hitchhiking in the Nebraska town where Sal Paradise got "the greatest ride in [his] life." Along the way, Sennott discovers remnants of Kerouac's America, and ponders the author's notion of "time."
Each segment is designed as a drop-in to NPR's Morning Edition segment E. Included here are scripts for suggested host intros and tags. The total duration of each piece with intro and tag is ~7:15 and there is plenty of great music to fill under the rest of the segment.

PART 4
INTRO: Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" traces the coast-to-coast travels of Sal Paradise. In the novel, published fifty years ago this month, Sal says the greatest ride of his life began in North Platte, Nebraska on a flat-bed truck.
The travelers aboard share laughs and whiskey as the truck careens across the Nebraska panhandle. Fifty years later, Charles Sennott of The Boston Globe set out along the same roads. And, in part four of our weeklong series, he tries his hand at hitchhiking.
