Piece Description

In this special edition of Justice Talking, the Open Society Institute's Mort Halperin faces off against Clifford May of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies in a lively back and forth on the shoulds and coulds of nation building and what it takes to bring democracy to foreign lands. Host Margot Adler draws from the guests points of agreement and disagreement while providing insight into the recent blurring of the old lines demarcating positions of the left and the right. From Bosnia to Baywatch, the debate covers America's responsibility, U.N. involvement, and even touched upon the role of pop culture in an increasingly globalized world. High school and college students, community activists, and friends and family of active military personnel make up the large and diverse audience and add a variety of informed voices and personal stories to the program. Bring to your listeners a unique event, taped at the National Constitution Center, where they can tune in to the sound of democracy.

Review of Justice Talking: Exporting Democracy

A brief but useful warm-up report preps us for the debate that follows. Two impassioned, intelligent, opinionated gents have at this meaty topic, spurred on by thoughtful questions and Adler's skilled hosting and pointed questions. This is what I'd call public service programming at its lively best. sl
