Review of Compact Discoveries 44: Name That Tune!
It's back-to-school time. That indefatigable, fun-loving maestro, Fred Flaxman, has presented, for the first time -- ta ta! -- a musical quiz guaranteed to charm your auditory nerve and reward your ability to name ten tunes. One of the many perks of this hour-long exam involves gift prizes of compact discs if you send Flaxman answers that identify the tunes and their composers.
I'll confess I barely passed Flaxman's test, reasonably sure of having named seven of his ten selections.
Although Flaxman prefaces his quiz with the craggy, magnificent opening orchestral tutti from Brahms's D-minor Piano Concerto, his quiz selections tend to be less "serious." To use Flaxman's own adjectives, the music presented here is "delightful," and the overall tone of this piece is "light."
All things considered (!), I'd listen to Flaxman's beguiling medley of maddeningly memorable tunes if only to sit back and relish his all-time heart stoppers.
I won't reveal any answers here. That's for you to determine.
