Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship Documentary

From: M. Travis DiNicola
Length: 29:55

A documentary about Indianapolis' Creative Renewal Arts Fellowships which has granted 150 "artistic sabbaticals" since 1999. Read the full description.

Default-piece-image-1 During the past five years, 150 Indianapolis artists and arts administrators have received Creative Renewal Fellowships from the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Some have chosen to travel to European museums or take master classes, others have visited their ancestral home in Africa or fasted in the dessert for three days - all in the spirit of renewing themselves by rediscovering what it was that first led them to a career in the arts. Radio producer M. Travis DiNicola is also a recipient of the Creative Renewal Fellowship. How did he choose to renew himself? He spent his time recording and producing a number of radio documentaries about artists and arts events - many which have been heard on WFYI's The Art of the Matter. As part of the requirement of the Fellowship, all recipients must give a final public presentation of their work. For his, appropriately enough, Travis has created an extended radio documentary about the Creative Renewal Fellowship, featuring his own experiences, and including interviews with many of the recipients. The documentary features interviews with adminstrator Dave Lawrence, harpist Melissa Gallant, drummer Prince Julius Adeniyi, director Rose Kleiman, writer Dan Barden, and dancer Hilary McDaniel-Douglas. Originally broadcast on WFYI (Indianapolis) "The Art of the Matter" on 8/7/04.
