Piece Description
The voices of women and people of color are often placed second in "globalization" debates -- especially when it comes to finding alternative realities (read: solutions). By documenting the work of the Atlanta-based organization SisterLove, this project seeks to document and give an example of progressive social organizing and more importantly to challenge who it is we look to for answers. "SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally!" puts forward the voices of small group African-American women in seeking to answer the question: How do localized organizations, in the face of globalization and neo-liberalism, move beyond insular and service model structures to effectively integrate regional and global organizing? This is the first module of a proposed 3-part project that is being wholly produced and edited by first time audio producer Noah Chandler. Module 1 covers the local Atlanta efforts of SisterLove; Module 2 will cover SisterLove's global efforts and follows them to South African where they have purchased a working farm as part of their crusade for reproductive justice; Module 3 will travel back to Atlanta and offer analysis of global organizing and summarizing this issue using SisterLove's efforts as a focal point. Stylistically, "SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally" seeks to break free of the dominant style and approach found in the majority of work that is out today. It will attempt to use narration as little as possible so that the voices of those on the front lines of this work will take center stage. Local music plays a dominant role and lends a more cinematic feel to the project. Stay tuned as this piece develops. The completed project should be finished some time in 2009.

Review of SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally! Module 1 - AtlantaThoughtful, polished, and thoroughly engaging about an important global issue. Successfully uses music almost as a character. The lack of voice-overs or narration is an impressive feat when you consider the scope of the story that still manages to be conveyed through the subjects' voices. This would be a fresh and creative piece to hear broadcast on public radio. |

Review of SisterLove: Keeping It Real, Globally! Module 1 - AtlantaThis is a very interesting take on an all-too real problem. The producer here does a nice job of showing just how an organization within a community can mobilize to take power, even from a marginalized place. Regarding this piece, it has a consistent flow, aided by excellent musical accompaniment. Listeners are treated to a piece showing also the vitality that exists in a fight against a deadly enemy. Very well done. |

more compelling than i expected. an amazing job that places me right THERE. The producer did an amazing job. I feel humbled by his effort and by the work of my colleagues. The energy, the urgency, is undeniable and tangible. An exceptional piece, even if I am a bit biased.
