Piece Description
July 17, 2007 marks the fortieth anniversary of John Coltrane's death; he was only forty at the time, so he has been gone now as long as he was here. In a short life and all too short time at the center, John Coltrane greatly expanded our notion of jazz, enjoying both commercial success and acclaim, but also criticism and dwindling audiences later in his career. It's impossible to cover a significant part of his musical output in one hour, but on this program we touch certain key musical turning points, using both full pieces and parts of pieces, from his first recording, a jam session while he was in the Navy, through his time with Dizzie Gillespie and Miles Davis, and his own leading roles on the Prestige, Atlantic, and Impulse labels. From soft ballads with singer Johnny Hartman to the madness that is "Ascension" we try to scratch the surface hard on one of the most intriguing musical careers of all time. This is the first of two parts; the second will feature his master work "A Love Supreme" with guest Ashley Kahn, author of "The House That Trane Built" and "A Love Supreme: The Story Of John Coltrane's Signature Album."
