Ulmer_small On this program we will feature the new album from James Blood Ulmer, "Bad Blood In The City." Guitarist James Blood Ulmer has come to the blues from an unusual starting point: free jazz. He worked with avante garde drummer Rashied Ali and sax player Ornette Coleman in the 1970s and 80s. Around the turn of the century, Ulmer started recording blues, bringing the provocative and experimental sensibility of free jazz with him. On "Bad Blood In The City" Ulmer works with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, who is a playing-producer on the album, which mixes some older blues songs with new compositions by Ulmer. This show also visits the new releases of slide guitarist Ellen McIlwaine (with percusssionist Cassius Khan), Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen, Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara, and The Turtle Island String Quartet's new album "A Love Supreme: The Legacy Of John Coltrane" -- plus an affecting new song from Laurie Morvan.
