Review of Roots 30th Anniversary

Nannie and Bill Haley, the wife and son of author Bill Haley, talk about the 30th Anniversary of Roots with host Dan Kramer. The mix of clips from the TV series, as well as the ambiguous ambient presence of music in the background, are not able to salvage this piece from the languid pace, and lack of back introduction of the guests. More cowbell, or more narration would have made this brief interview stronger.

Timing and Cues

Roots is a genealogical novel by Alex Haley that traces his family history to the village of Juffure in the Gambia. The story begins when Kunta Kinte is captured by slave traders and is brought to America in 1766. Roots was first published in 1976 and the following year, Haley won the Pulitzer Prize. ABC turned Roots into a 12 hour mini series that was shown over 8 consecutive nights at the beginning of 1976. Roots became the third most viewed television program in the US and went on to win 9 Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award.

Dan Kramer recently spoke with Alex Haley?s widow Nannie Haley and their son Bill Haley
