Sculpted By Fire

From: Barbara Bernstein
Length: 00:54:05

Wildfire season is upon us. SCULPTED BY FIRE challenges a lot of common assumptions about forest fires and the need to wage a war on fire that is reminiscent in its hype and hysteria of the war on terrorism. In coming weeks the media will abound with stories about the "raging battles against wildfires." Sculpted By Fire looks behind and beyond the hype and headlines. This new documentary presents another face of wildfire - as a necessary force for shaping and maintaining healthy forest ecosystems. Read the full description.

Biscuitbeargrass_small In mid July of 2002 a series of lightning strikes ignited a number of small fires in some very remote mountainous areas of SW Oregon. The fires merged into what became known as the Biscuit Fire, the largest fire that year in North America, burning across an area the size of Rhode Island. Sculpted By Fire, a one-hour radio documentary by Barbara Bernstein, takes us on a journey into a landscape that has been shaped by fires like the Biscuit. It explores the role that fire played in creating the forests of the North American West and how Native People set controlled fires to manage the forests where they lived. The program examines the consequences of a century of fire suppression and why it is vital that historic fire regimes be allowed to return to sculpt this landscape again. This story is told against the backdrop of the political firestorm that raged in the wake of the Biscuit fire as forest activists battled timber interests in a struggle to determine the fate of these special areas.

Review of Sculpted By Fire

Compelling content, excellent production values. Enough?

This gripped me with the rich, clean sound of thunder and first-hand accounts which introduced the feature.

Well edited. Nicely written. Many sounds and voices all designed to advance the story. Narrated authoriatatively and consistantly authentic.

The sound and voice descriptions had me walking beside her during Barbara's tour of the region four years after the fire.

Add a billboard, create a news hole and an avail or two and you have a really good 59-minute documentary ready to use. The subject matter might not engage all communities but certainly could have "local' ties to many.

Judy McHugh I was actually swimming in Rough and Ready Creek the day the fire started with some friends and we saw the lightning and I remember joking, oh my mother would be so upset if she knew I was swimming while lightning was occurring.

Linc Phillippi I?m Linc Phillippi, I?m president of Rough and Ready Lumber Company. We?re a small family-owned sawmill lumber manufacturing business in Cave Junction, Oregon, approximately three miles from the heart of the Biscuit
Fire. We were here everyday watching the fire start from a relatively small lighting caused fire that we thought could have been put out early on.
