Sprawling of America

From: The Environment Report
Length: 59:01

Hour-long documentary on the costs and causes of urban sprawl. Read the full description.

Sprawlingamerica_small This doc is a lively look at the issue of urban sprawl. Lots of sound and stories from the field, from the farm field, to wildlife habitat to the big city. You'll hear about coyotes grabbing pets from suburban homes, farmers who sell their farms to developers, and people who build and live in closet-size houses. Urban sprawl costs everyone. All taxpayers end up subsidizing the infrastructure costs of some of the wealthier subdivisions. Racism is still a large part of segregated suburbs. Traffic congestion is getting worse and that causes more air pollution. Communities are designed for the automobile, leaving few options for people who want to walk or ride bicycles to get around. Zoning for large lots forces builders to build ever larger houses to recoup costs. Farmland is being paved over. And wildlife are being hurt by loss of habitat.
