Piece Description

One night in 2005, Voice of Youth correspondent Amanda Wells went to see Jonathan Kozol, one of the most prominent critics of the American education system, speak at Sonoma State University. Kozol is the National Book Award-winning author, who was first recognized for his book "Savage Inequalities", which detailed the roving rats, falling ceilings, and missing school books that was "normal" schooling for children from poor families of color in the Bronx. In the 40 years he's been working on the issue of education inequality, he's achieved a kind of rock star status, selling out venues around the country. Amanda went to hear him speak about his new book, "The Shame of a Nation", with its provocative sub-heading, "the restoration of apartheid schooling in America". When she arrived, Amanda didn't have a ticket, nor did she have an interview set up. We won't give away the end, but let's just say you're going to hear some things no one sitting in the audience heard that night...
