Description:

Nearly half of California's young people have at least one immigrant parent. That means more than ever, immigrants and their children will define the future of this state... and the country.

Whether the next generation grows up to be productive and stable, or impoverished and underemployed, will depend a lot on its level of education.

We begin with a report from KALW's Zoe Corneli, who investigates the challenges immigrant families face as they navigate the U.S. school system... and what some groups are doing to help them out.

That's followed by an interview with attorney Maria Echaveste. She served as deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, managing domestic policy initiatives that focused on education, civil rights and immigration. She discusses the opportunities, and lack thereof, for immigrants in the United States.
