Part One: Reading, Writing, Surviving
Chiang Mai is located in northern Thailand and is its second largest city, behind Bangkok. A largely poor city, there are many people in need of help in Chiang Mai, but very few resources. Needless to say, childhood in Chiang Mai can be dehumanizing and desperate. And it?s exactly these helpless, and seemingly hopeless, children that our guests, Maryknoll Lay Missioners Billy and Kathleen Doerner, have been helping for the past 6 years
OPTIONAL CUTAWAY CUE: ??Voices of Our World" at 14:00 and 28:00.
Part Two: Build A School, Change A Life
Many of Thailand?s hill tribe children live their lives on the margins of society. Forgotten by the government and hidden in slums, their plight is unknown to most, or simply ignored. The Baan Phonsawan Child Development Center, started in 2001 by the Doerners, and initially funded by the awe-inspiring charity of a dying child from Hong Kong, seeks to teach these children how to enter Thai society, while showing them the love and caring that is too often absent from their lives at home. We continue our interview with Maryknoll Lay Missioners Billy and Kathleen Doerner.
