- #3: Hang Time with Igor at Post 43
- From
- Jackson Braider
Igor Stravinsky conducted or supervised the recording of some three dozen compositions in a rather curious setting, the American Legion Hall, Hollywood Post 43, located just down the hill from the Hollywood Bowl on North Highland Avenue. It turns out that the Legion Hall, along with a resounding hall, has a history all its own -- thanks in no small part to the man with a cast of thousands, Cecil B. DeMille. With cameo appearances featuring Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Stewart, and Mr. French from the old TV series, A Family Affair, independent producer Jackson Braider looks and listens in on one the best live recording venues in the Los Angeles Basin, and explores the role it played in documenting so much of Stravinsky's musical catalog.

(sotto voce) This is room noise, the sound of almost silence in the main hall of the American Legion, Hollywood Post 43. In 1960, Igor Stravinsky with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra recorded Petrushka here. Up through 1968, the Russian composer led the recording of some three dozen works in this place, including Pulcinella, his 1945 version of the Firebird Suite, the Violin Concerto, and a host of other works you've probably never heard.
Now, if you're a fool for science like me, you've got a vague handle on all kinds of amazing things ? like, for instance, when you look in the sky at night, you know you're actually looking back thousands, maybe even tens of thousands of years. That's because the rays of light emitted by those stars have taken all that time to pass through sp...
