Taken from the upcoming public radio special THE TWO SIDES OF SGT. PEPPER: AN HONEST APPRAISAL, this excerpt spotlights the single The Beatles released from those sessions. Although neither Strawberry Fields Forever nor Penny Lane was included on the ensuing Pepper album, the single, released in February of 1967, is heralded by many critics as one of the most remarkable two-sided hits of all-time. SUGGESTED INTRO TO PIECE: 40 years ago, in 1967, pop radio listeners were hearing a new sound from the top band of the time, and some say, of all-times, the Beatles. Like many of the songs on Revolver, The Beatles daring and inventive album from 1966, the single released in the spring of 1967 shook things up as well. The recording sessions that would eventually result their landmark Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band also produced what some call the greatest single of all-time. Reporter Paul Ingles assembled a panel of musicians, writers and fans to recall what was noteworthy about Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane. Review of Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane: Best Single Ever?This piece is slightly expanded from segments in Paul Ingles's highly recommended Sgt. Pepper program. If you've got two hours to spare, I'd definitely go for the Pepper show. Numerous voices explain what led to the different-from-anything-that-came -before-it 1967 single from the Beatles, and we get to hear both songs. There really isn't any discussion of the "best single ever?" question--just as well because there are quite a few other candidates, even for best double-sided single ever. Also, mercifully, there's no discussion of the rumored death of Paul McCartney although we can't help but hear "I buried Paul":(or is it "cranberry sauce"?) at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever." Unlike the Pepper program, this piece requires you to do an intro; an outro wouldn't hurt, either. |

Review of Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane: Best Single Ever?
You can always expect Paul Ingles to shatter your knowledge of music. If you think you're a Beatles enthusiast, for example, you should listen to any of his pieces on the band, such as this one, and find out how little you know. Yes, you. Yes, me too.
No shame in that. I'd rather learn from the best. This piece re-visits and demos the construction of two classics as told by historians and historical archive mother lode - the recordings by the band. Shame on anyone who underestimates the influence of The Beatles on music. Period.
Not you, of course. You are reading this because you get my drift.
