Default-piece-image-1 Syracuse is home to people from many other countries. Some have come for professional reasons to a private university or the Medical School. Others traveled here as refugees, with several resettlement programs. Some of these people share opinions about what they've found in American Democracy, comparing it to the governments of their homes, and offering some comments and criticisms. Ultimately, though, they all find ways to get into the democratic spirit in supportive ways.

Review of By the People

A nice collection of international voices in Syracuse. The story unfolds smoothly enough in the first minute, but it seems like the issue of politics is bluntly introduced -- maybe the writing in this section could use some work. But the voices carry the piece the rest of the way through. A highlight is the comparison of U.S. government to Ghanaian government.

Review of By the People

Immigrants contrasting American and other democracies makes for a thoughtful example of seeing the inside more clearly from the outside. The multi-colored "voice of the people" would make for a good drop-in under the canopy of Who's Democracy Is it? - (nice embedded moment about how some Ghanians get their news..)

Anchor Intro:

Syracuse is a typical mid-sized city situated not far from Lake Ontario and the Adirondak mountains in Central New York. Many would be surprised that this average American city attracts people from all over the world. Nearly one tenth of the population in Syracuse is foreign-born. And attendance at a recent immigration ceremony included people from Afghanistan, Cuba, Egypt, El Salvador, Somalia, and Serbia. A well-known University, a Medical School, the low cost-of-living, and several refugee resettlement programs are some of the reasons people relocate there. >From WAER in Syracuse, Catherine Komp reports on how some of these diverse people are experiencing U.S. Democracy.
