Back in 1867, Alaska became American by virtue of one vote. Since then there have been some pretty close elections. Alaskan politics are fabricated of tight races and the importance of casting an individual ballot.
But despite the power of one man's vote, the leverage of incumbancy is poignant, especially when commenced without a regular election. Alaska is the only state in modern American history to have its entire Congressional Delegation reach office through appointment and special election, most recently when ex-Senator, now-Governor Frank Murkowski appointed his own daughter Lisa to fill his Senate seat, a US first.
Poet and spoken word artist Geo Beach (Sigma Delta Chi medallion best commentaries, WorldMedal best writing) canvases America's northern icon as a microcosm of democracy for Whose Democracy Is It?

The Power of One ReviewGovernor Murkowski is suing Gale Norton, Secretary for the Department of the Interior, to to open a long-closed trail to allow better access to mines. Historical use? Check. I have to wonder, knowing nothing about the politics of the Land of the Midnight Sun, is Murkowski behind the recent push to recriminalize pot? |

Review of The Power of OneAlaska has always sounded interesting to me. Geo Beach pushes this further... Guvner Bushrat, political nepotism, losing to marijuana... An excellent, wide ranging commentary for those looking for commentaries, especially and obviously involving politics and the question "Whose Democracy is it, Anyway?" |

Whose Democracy is it? Hey, you tell me.
I live up in Alaska, America's Platonic projection of ideals and aspirations, battleground of absentee environmentalists and armchair roughnecks. Not quite outer space, but it's definitely this country's final frontier.
We used to say "Anyone can get elected up here". The all-time favorite governor is called Bush Rat, and that's a compliment. Alaska had the only card-carrying Libertarian elected to a state legislature in America. And 24 years after he had been voted governor as a Republican, a guy who said he got his ideas from some "Little Man" was elected governor as an Independent while receiving less votes...

Review of The Power of One
Geo Beach beautifully explains Alaska's bizarre political environment to the rest of the country. "The Power of One" hits the nailhead squarely and explains, even to me, a 30 year resident, some issues that I had not even tied together, such as the fact that all three of our Congresspeople (both U.S. Senators and our lone Congressman) WERE ALL APPOINTED TO THEIR SEATS before they were actually elected by Alaskans.
I had no idea I could hear his words online, but went looking today because I just read Geo's new piece, one of the best commentaries to appear in the Anchorage Daily News on statewide politics and spending ("State Politics: Inventive Money Wasting" March 25, 2006).
