Piece Description
Part One: DEATH IN JUAREZ: Over 320 women have been raped, tortured and murdered in the Mexican border town, Ciudad Juarez, and in the state of Chihuahua. Five hundred more have disappeared without a trace. Elinoar Astrinsky participated in the Maryknoll led Border Pilgrimage to bring attention to the increasing number of deaths at the border. Along with Judy Coode from the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, she visited Juarez where Maryknoll priest Paul Masson lives and works. He introduced them to a mother of a fifteen-year-old who was found dead in a cotton field and the aunt of another young woman who disappeared three years ago. Part Two: NI UNA MAS - NOT ONE MORE: Over the past ten years, little has been done to investigate the disappearances and deaths of hundreds of young women. Rueben Garcia, director of Annunciation House, explains that police corruption, strained economic resources, and lack of political will contribute to the devaluation of the life of women. At a protest in front of the Mexican consulate, Michelle Otero, a volunteer for Amigos de las Mujeres de Juarez, proclaims that inaction sends a clear message to people on both sides of the border, that it is easy to kill women and get away with it.

Review of Death In Juarez
Near the beginning of this piece a priest living in Juarez says in a drol manner "This is not a nice place." And as this programme unfolds one realises how much of an understatement this is.
All the information you need to know about the content is written in the accompanying material. It is simply put together but the strength of this programme is in the choice of interviewees. They are very eloquent and give a thorough idea of what's happening in Juarez and why. Why are so many women being murdered and the killers seem to be perpetrating them with impunity.
This is a very thought provoking programme and well worth playing although you'd have to check whether it's still contemporaneous since it was made more than two years ago. For exmaple, at one stage someone says that Vincente Fox is the president. He no longer is.
