Series: Blues & Beyond
From: WXPN
Length: 00:59:00

Folks songs with a new approach from Bethany & Rufus, and the distinctive blues of Bentonia Ms Read the full description.

Bentoniablues_small Bethany Yarrow is the daughter of Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul & Mary. She grew up believing that she would never want to perform the music that her father did, but through associations with punk rock and hard-core music, she came to the realization that folk music could be interpreted in a new way. With cellist Rufus Cappadocia, she has produced a fresh new album in the folk genre called "900 Miles" -- which we explore in this hour. Also in this hour, the distinctive blues of Bentonia, Mississippi. The most illustrious Bentonia blues player was the late Skip James, but it turns out his style of playing has been around in Bentonia for a long time and was played by at least several artists, some who were his contemporaries. Most of the Bentonia bluesman don't venture forth from their somewhat isolated town, but now Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is bringing the blues of Bentonia to a larger audience. We will hear from Holmes, Jack Owens, and Skip James. Also, we have a jazz interpretations of q folk song from John Coltrane and something unusual from his drummer Elvin Jones.
