On Wednesday, February 14th, Valentine's Day, the Stairwell Gallery hosted the premiere of the audio documentary "The Breakup Project: Tales of Woe, Wonder, and Other Psycho Pop." The project began over a winter dinner when producers and friends Megan Hall and Sue Ellen Kroll commiserated about their own recent breakups- laughing about the difficulty of navigating social circles and small town rumor mills. The joke grew into a full hour-long audio presentation featuring the break up stories of over 20 Providence residents and live music mixing by Tom Vanbuskirk.

Review of The Break Up Project Performance
For anyone still haunted by the ghosts of an old intimacy?for anyone still sweeping up those shattered pieces of what used to be your heart,..for anyone who still gets trapped in a raw and oozing maze of memories of THEM?guess what, YOUR?RE NOT THE FIRST ONE!!!
The Break Up Project weaves together the stories of disappointment, misery and outrageousness that so often erupt when one person in a relationship decides, voc solo, ?Yeah, my heart?s just not in it anymore.? The cumulative effect of the fragmented storylines here gives this listener a scrappy sense of perseverance: even when people do their worst to each other, life still ticks on. And even if it doesn?t heal all wounds?time might give you at least a sense of humor about that horrible, awful, rotten relationship that almost ruined your life.
But if time?s not doing it for you, then maybe the Break Up Project can! As one voice lays out, ?I really think that people who haven?t had their hearts seriously broken don?t understand love. They can?t fully get it. It?s like you have to understand it in its destructive power, too.? And if you?re always the heartbreaker? Well, I guess we wouldn?t have these stories without you...
The narratives are loosely focused around people from Providence, RI, but they resonate with life in any tight-knit community. The music beds are well chosen (yeah, did MacGyver ever get his heart-broken, or did he Swiss Army that shit back together? And Pissing in a River??wow) but some of the voice to music mixing is a bit jagged in parts (maybe some Providence flavor?). And one last critical comment: the end tape about ?f*@#ing for love? introduced an abrupt shift in tone that left me a bit jarred after 50 previous minutes of collage thoughtfulness. Perhaps an intended return to the animal side of it all, but too quick a shift for my mood. All in all a real therapeutic ride.
