On Feb. 5, 2007 a group of Dine (Navajo) grandmothers left the protest they have held in sub-zero weather since Dec. 12, 2006 at Desert Rock near Shiprock, New Mexico. They traveled with their sons, daughters and grandchildren to the Roundhouse in Santa Fe to tell Governor Bill Richardson and the legislators they do not want a new coal power plant in their homeland. The segment begins with background info and then interviews elders, including protest leader elder Lucy A. Willie, as they wait for the Governor and Presidential candidate. We listen as he meets and carefully responds to their concerns about building a 3rd power plant in the Farmington area and the 85 million tax break Sithe Global is seeking from NM. After meeting with Richardson, the group joins an hour-long rally of some 300 people in the rotunda of the Roundhouse. We hear a selection of Dine and environmental leaders speak out against the plant, the pollution it will cause, and its effect on global warming. Highlights include a passionate speech in Navajo by grandmother Molly Hogue translated by her grandson, and a 12 year old Navajo Jesse Wiaki, questioning why the plant can not be built in the back yard of the people who will use the electricity.
