Description:

A newly discovered flute concerto by Pyotr Ill'yich Tchaikovsky received a world premiere in January. Concertstuck for Flute and Strings was performed by James Strauss and the Oxford Chamber Orchestra January 31, 2006, in Hall Auditorium at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

Strauss learned of the existence of fragments of the piece from his teacher, Jean Pierre Rampal. His search to discover, edit and reconstruct the three-movement concerto reads like a detective novel, taking him from his native Sao Paolo to St. Petersburg to Paris.

As part of the premiere, Miami hosted a forum on the concerto and its discovery.

The Oxford Chamber Orchestra is composed of Miami music faculty and advanced students. Ricardo Averbach is conductor. The Concertstuck is scored for 22 musicians.
