Alicecoltrane0_small Alice Coltrane died on January 12th at the age of 69. Although she will probably be most remembered as the wife of John Coltrane, she was a talented and original artist in her own right. She fully shared John Coltrane's unceasing search for new musical expression and spiritual awakening through music. Born Alice McLeod in 1937 in Detroit, she received classical training, practiced the organ at her church, and then absorbed jazz. Her first appearance on record was with Terry Gibbs on "Terry Gibbs Plays Jewish Melodies in Jazztime" in 1963. This program offers one of those tracks, some of her work with her husband's band, and a sampling of her original music after his death, on keyboards and harp in various settings. Alice Coltrane's commitment to spirituality and Eastern religion was lifelong and inseparable fom her music. Pieces in this program include her "Huntington Ashram Monastery" and "Journey In Satchidananda."
