Review of My Family, Your Family, Our Family
An interesting piece that could be used just about any time that same-sex issues come up in the headlines. It shares the story of a comic book created to share the story of "non-traditional" and "traditional" family structures with children of all backgrounds.
The piece is quick and efficient. Its easy to wish that more time could be spent with the families and comic authors as a way to "illustrate" the story's characters, but brevity wins out here. Making the piece shorter makes it more useful to more stations. It was the right choice. The production technique leaves a bit to be desired from time to time (including some over modulated micing on the reporter). Given the interest level of the content, it's easy to overlook these small flaws. |

ANCHOR: Our Family Coalition, a nonprofit organization that promotes the civil rights and well being of families with LGBT members, began in 1994 with TEN families. Today, they boast over 500 member families!
While families find more legal, political, and social support today, there is a dearth of children’s books reflecting queer families. The creators of a recently released coloring book hope to address this need.
Producer, Robynn Takayama, who also works for the San Francisco Arts Commission, explains.
NARRATOR: In February 2004, San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom validated queer relationships by legalizing same sex marriage. But even without legal recognition, many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people are in committed relationships and are creating families.

Review of My Family, Your Family, Our Family
This piece focuses on the artistic process of two authors who have published a coloring book: My Family, Your Family, Our Family.
The book features unconventional families--families where gay,lesbian, and transgendered adults have established households full of children --some households even have multiple parents.
In learning about the book there are also interviews with those who inspired some of the illustrations. Although short this piece is robust. The pacing is unconventional but effective.
This would be a good segment for "Outright Radio," it would also be an unconventional choice for any show doing a feature on summer reading lists. This is also a good fit for any show that has a theme on Family dynamics, literature and/or Gay and Lesbian issues.
