Transcript for the Piece Audio version of RN Documentary: Taming the Salt Monster
Look at a map of Australia and you?ll see a vast expanse of yellow outlined with a thin smattering of green around the edge. Of course maps can look deceptive ? that thin edge of green actually is home to most of the country?s population, its giant agricultural industry and some of the most beautiful flora and fauna to be found on the planet. Oh and also, the colour of Australia?s heart isn?t yellow ? it?s red.
And in between that red heart and the green coast, there are great swathes of land that hover between fertile bounty and desert.

The productive wheat belt of Western Australia is prone to a very specific sort of desertification: the problem is not that there?s a shortage of water, but ironically there?s too much of it.

The pale and dry landscape of the wheatbelt is deceiving. Under the horizonless grass paddocks lie salty streams. For millions of years these streams flowed under the earth, under the parched looking Australian bush. But now the bush is gone and the salt under the land is making its presence felt.

Farmers have caused the salination of the land.
But it is the land that they love; that is their home, their life, their livelihoods. In damaging the land, they damage themelves and their families heritage.
So Their forebears awakened the salt monster, and now, for their children?s sake, they have to find a way of pacifying it.

The unknowing visitor to the wheatbelt would not notice the lurking presence of the salt monster. After all, that bald patch on the far paddock maybe because sheep have eaten all the grass. Perhaps those glinting white crystals on that lake are an aberration ? a small salty sea set in the golden sheep dotted landscape.
But the farmers know the land as they know how to breathe. They can feel its pulse as easily as their own. They know about the salt monster, and they?re busy coming up with all sorts of ideas and solutions to keep it at bay.
