In Columbus GA, along the banks of the Chattahoochee River sits Ft. Benning ? home of United States Army Infantry School ? home of basic training, ranger school, and the airborne school. Benning also houses the controversial School of the Americas. Since 2001, it has been called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation and is the Defense Department's principal Spanish-language training facility for Latin American military and law-enforcement personnel. On Nov 18 and 19th of 2006, 20,000 people gathered at the gates of Fort Benning to demand the closing of School of the Assassins as they call it, with graduates like Panamanian Manuel Noriega, El Salvador's Roberto D'Aubuisson, and Former Argentine President General Leopoldo Galtieri.
