MY STOMACH IS IN KNOTS. AT 4 A.M., I WAKE UP SHUDDERING AT THE THOUGHT OF THE NEXT GAME. I DON?T PLAY. I DON?T COACH. I AM, A FOOTBALL MOM. IT?S A DUBIOUS STATUS I DIDN?T ASK FOR. I WAS STUNNED WHEN MY SON, KANAAN, LEFT THE PLAYGROUND FOR THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. PLAYING FOOTBALL REQUIRES A UNIQUE INTENSITY. SOMEHOW, I GET SWEPT UP IN IT.

I CONSIDER MYSELF SOMETHING OF A PACIFIST. I SOUND LIKE ANYTHING BUT ON THE SIDELINES.
