Piece Description
The Gastronauts are a group of adventurous eaters who get together once a month to push their culinary limits and explore the most exotic food New York City has to offer. In the past, the Gastronauts have eaten inch-long Nigerian snails, fried Pork Belly and - most famously - live, squirming Octopus. This piece follows the Gastronauts to the Rudar Soccer Club, a beer hall/restaurant in Long Island City, Queens that serves traditional Istrian (western Croatia) cuisine. It features interviews/stories with the group's three founders, sound of the night's festivities, all interweaved with the music of the Tin Hat Trio, Tosca Tango Orchestra and Kronos Quartet.

+ Suggested Intro:
It's now time to meet a group of eaters who like to push their gastronomical limits. Every month they hop the subway in search of the most exotic food New York City has to offer.
They call themselves the Gastronauts, and their latest adventure took them one hour out of Manhattan, to the Rudar Soccer Club, a beer hall slash restaurant that caters to the local Croatian community.
Over a dozen Gastronauts made the trip to Rudar, crowding into the club's small basement. We spoke with the group's three founders...

Review of The Gastronauts
Nicely done. A small group of adventurous eaters who can also talk engagingly about their hobby. A story about a search for live octopi. A meal scene; in this case, some relatively approachable-sounding Croatian vittles are on the menu. Sly, leisurely music sets the mood. At the end, folks say good night and go home. A tasty concoction, on the whole. I can imagine a station running this piece as a set-up for a show about food or eating.
