Blues & Beyond #284: Tribute to Hubert Sumlin (00:59:00)
From: WXPN

Program devoted to guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who died December 4, 2011

Piece Description

This program digs into a new CD-DVD combination package "Drink House To Church House, Vol. 1" from the Music Maker Foundation, featuring modern rural blues performers, mostly from southeastern states. The rough-hewn sound of Macavine Hayes, the clicking percussion of Haskell "Whistlin' Britches" Thompson, and the sweet baritone of Captain Luke are all part of this first volume in a set that will eventually offer four albums and culminate in a film documentary about the Music Maker Relief Foundation. This hour also features two artists on the Music Maker label from other albums, Georgia blues singer Sweet Betty and the late Etta baker, who died recently at age 93. Baker was an influential digure during the years of the folk revival in the 1950s and 1960s. Also included is a track from a hard-hitting Alabama bluesman, Willie King.
