John Dean - Conservatives Without Conscience
Series: Living Well Show
From: Donna Descoteaux
Length: 00:28:56
Who are Conservatives Without Conscience? In John Dean?s new book, Conservatives Without Conscience, he gives us unusual insights into the ?authoritarian personality? and how they have come to dominate the Republican party. John Dean, who served as White House counsel under Richard Nixon and helped to break the Watergate scandal with his testimony before the Senate, turns an analytical eye on the Republican Party that has changed drastically from the conservative movement he joined in the mid-1960s as a Goldwater Republican. He shares with us his dismay at the direction his party has taken and draws on social science research to help us understand the personalities involved and their motivations. Authoritarianism has been the subject of serious investigation by social scientists for over 50 years, but the research has been relatively ignored outside academia. Mr. Dean brings attention to this research to uncover for the general public the striking authoritarian character of contemporary conservative beliefs, attitudes and prejudices that are shaping our public policy today.
