Piece Description
"Out of the Ashes: Teatro la Fenice" is a feature on the tragedy and triumphant return of this iconic Venetian opera and music house. It relives the fire that destroyed the theater eight years ago and the excitement of the Venetian people as they take their first steps into its latest incarnation. Teatro la Fenice will officially reopen to the world this coming November, 2004, but producer Angela Taylor was in Venice during a one week celebration last December -- exclusively designed to give the Venetian public a sneak peak at their culural jewel. The piece is delicately narrated, sound rich and designed to bring alive Venice and her theater for opera fans and non-opera fans, alike. There are segments of works from Mahler, Stravinsky, and Wagner within the piece.

Review of "Out of the Ashes: Teatro la Fenice"There's a good story in here with some strong elements but they're somewhat out of place. As someone not familiar with the opera world or Venice's place in it, I felt like I needed more of a handle before I was ready to be launched into the heart of the story. There's some interesting historic, literary and musical background in the middle of the piece that I could have used at the beginning. When the narrator mentions that Elton John played at the Teatro la Fenic, I was waiting to hear "Crocodile Rock." Where have you gone Savvy Traveler? Is there an outlet for travel pieces on public radio now? Maybe stations need to create their own.... |

Review of "Out of the Ashes: Teatro la Fenice"
This is a wonderful subject for public radio, but the piece is about twice as long as it needs to be. Would cut most of the first half. The emphasis on the fenice (phoenix) metaphor is just right, and the ending of the piece is strong, especially in decribing the image of the phoenix in the theatre. The musical background is also more effective during the last 5 min. than during the first portion of the piece.
