Whether they are forced to, or whether they plan to, each year more and more seniors move into retirement homes. In the year 2000, Peg Collison was one of them. Peg left the town of San Mateo, California - where she'd been living for almost 35 years - and moved two hours away into a newly built retirement community in Davis, California. These transitions are often difficult not just for the person who's actually moving but for family members and for friends left behind. Peg's son, Dan, gave his mom a tape recorder and asked her document her transition. Together, Peg and Dan produced a three part series on Peg's move and what it meant to her and her family.
"Mom's Good Move" was produced in three parts, from 11-13 minutes in length.
Winner: Clarion Award; National Federation of Community Broadcasters' Golden Reel Award
"Mom's Good Move" was first broadcast on All Things Considered in 2000.

PART I HOST INTRO:
Voluntarily or not, each year tens of thousands of this country’s elderly population move into retirement homes. Recently, Peg Collison was one of them. Peg left her home in San Mateo, California—where she’d been living for almost 30 years—and moved two hours away into a newly built retirement community in Davis, California. These transitions are often difficult not just for the person who’s actually moving, but for family members and for friends left behind. Peg’s son, Dan—an independent radio producer—gave his mom a tape recorder and asker her to document her transition. Today, we begin a series on Peg’s move and what it meant for her family. It’s produced by Peg and Dan Collison. They call it “Mom’s Good Move.”
Tape.
Part I of “Mom’s Good Move” was produced by Peg and Dan Collison and edited by Gary Covino for Long Haul Productions. Thanks to Lauren Fr...

Review of Mom's Good Move
i defy anyone with aging parents to listen to this piece and not be deeply moved, deeply engaged. it is the best take i've heard on a question now becoming ubiquitous. the mterial is so drenched with emotion that the straightforward take of both the narrator and the main subject are much appreciated--it's truly a piece that should appear on everyone's air.
