Virtuoso Voices - JoAnn Falletta (Remembering Leonard Bernstein)
Series: Virtuoso Voices(tm)
From: Listener Directed Productions, Inc.
Length: 00:00:34
Conducting students of Leonard Bernstein were surprised to find that their teacher rarely discussed baton technique or how to use their left hand to direct the orchestra. One of his students, JoAnn Falletta, says he more often "talked about the music, what it meant, and the people under the music." But, she adds, that's just one part of the Bernstein mystique. Use this clip to enhance your introduction of recordings* by either Leonard Bernstein or JoAnn Falletta. **This clip will work well as an enhanced Intro to the Bizet Carmen Suites conducted by Leonard Bernstein (Sony 63081) but any Bernstein conducted performance will work. *This clip is is also suitable for any JoAnn Falletta recording.
SUGGESTED HOST INTRO
The Leonard Bernstein mystique is alive and well, nearly 17* years after his death. For conductor and former Bernstein conducting student JoAnn Falletta, it was all about how he walked into the room.
*LB: August 25, 1918 - October 14, 1990
CLIP TRANSCRIPT
"He was so astonishing. You know he'd come in and the atmosphere in the room would become kind of charged. And he never talked about technique, or being clear, or how you beat this, or how you show that. He always talked about music, and what it meant, and the people under the music. You know, we talked about Carmen, we were studying Carmen with him once, and he would conjure up this image of the bull ring, and the blood, and the sand, and the sun beating down, and the crowd screaming. And all of a sudden you would feel differently about the music because of how he explained it to you."
