Before the Spanish arrived in the new world, only wind and percussion instruments existed. Bone, shell, and clay flutes, pan pipes made from bamboo, and skin-covered drums were the norm. There were no stringed instruments. Once the vihuela and guitar arrived, local offshoots were created like the tres, the cuatro, and the charango, even harps. But prior to the Conquest ? the indigenous music of what was to become the Americas sounded completely different.
It?s hard to say exactly what this pre-colonial indigenous music sounded like. Over the past 500 years the vast majority of indigenous populations in the Americas have been wiped out or have assimilated into European culture. But in places like Chiapas Mexico, Guatamala, Peru, and Bolivia their numbers still reach almost 50%...quite possibly because they are areas of mountains and volcanoes?and therefore areas difficult to con...
