Piece Description
McCoy Tyner is one of the greatest living pianists and a leading figure in jazz music. Tyner was the pianist in the John Coltrane Quartet in the first half of the 1960s, joining Coltrane on many of his greatest recordings, including "A Love Supreme." After leaving Coltrane, Tyner led his own bands, and over the past forty years has made dozens of albums. Although his music has been deeply studied and analyzed by music theoreticians and critics, the pianist-composer himself relies mostly on intuition to perform and write music. This program features tracks from his first session as a member of the Jazztet with Benny Golson and Art Farmer, the Coltrane Quartet's "A Love Supreme," and both solo and band recordings from Tyner, as well as an interview recorded May 20, 2006 at the "Welcome Home McCoy Tyner" celebration at Temple University in his home town Philadelphia.
