The controversial Harvard Law professor, author and celebrity lawyer Alan Dershowitz talks about his latest book, "Preemption: A Knife That Cuts Both Ways", as well as his views on the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, torture, human rights and our "war on terror." His premise: the world has changed, and international law must change with it. We need more tools, he argues, in the fight against terror networks whose recruits hold no fear of death or retribution.
Note: Although the subjects we discuss are controversial, my goal is not to argue with Alan, but to find out what he's thinking. My hope is that our conversation will provoke further discussion on these hot-button issues. Hide full description

Review of Alan Dershowitz on the doctrine of preemption, the Hezbollah and the 'war on terror' -- on ThoughtCast

A smart interview with the always-interesting and hyper-articulate law professor. The conversation starts with Dershowitz's proposal, from his latest book, that nations (including the U.S.) acknowledge they sometimes use torture in the face of terrorism--and that the president sign off on any use of torture. Dershowitz insists his point is not to legitimize torture but in fact to lessen its use by making leaders accountable--as opposed to the status quo, in which many nations use torture but simply deny doing so.

The interview goes beyond legal questions to topics like Israel's strategy (military and public relations) in fighting its enemies. Dershowitz is thoughtful enough, and Jenny Attiyeh's questions are knowledgable enough, that most listeners will go along.

Refreshingly smart interviewing -- this is a radio series that you should hear and share: a complement to evening or weekend news programming.

Host/producer Jenny Attiyeh ((ah-TEE-ah)) does her homework and is mindful of her listeners' need for context to better comprehend the intricacies of the issues that touch us all. That comes as no surprise as Attiyeh is a seasoned reporter having worked for the BBC, KCRW, WBUR and WNYC as well as in public television. She counts among her mentors Charles Nesson and Chris Lydon and it shows in her style.

Having queried her at some length, Attiyeh is genuinely interested in reaching listeners with this thought-provoking initiative. She is driven to provide programmers with content they can use -- to better target a specific audience or demographic, making for a collaborative effort that stations and listeners alike will appreciate. If you want to offer the program in a presentation that differs from the current format, Attiyeh is accommodating and professional.

Worth investigating for the autumn season.
