Piece Description

Willie "Big Eyes" Smith has a new album out, "Way Back." In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we hear several tracks from the album as well as some music from Smith's past. Willie Smith arrived in Chicago in the 1950s as a teenager trying to make it in music, playing both harmonica and drums. He worked with several bands, played harmonica on a Bo Diddley record (which is played on this show) &, after some hard years, was invited to join the Muddy Waters Blues Band as a drummer. After a couple of decades with Muddy, he co-founded the Legendary Blues Band, whose success over the decade and half after that secured his career. For the past ten years he has led his own bands. This hour of B&B also includes a new track from jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut and a record from the World Saxophone Quartet recorded in 1991.
