Piece Description
Dar Williams pours a lot of her own quirks, embarrassments, and lessons-learned-the-hard-way into her music. One of those lessons involved a snide remark from an ex-boyfriend. It came at the end of their relationship -- a time she compares to "the last days of the dinosaurs before the meteor hit." But it gave her the freedom let her songs ramble wildly ... so long as they kept a sense of purpose. In this feature, Williams describes her evolving approach to songwriting, and makes the case for finding musical connections between Cajun cooking and Amish quilts. As in all the pieces in David Schulman's CPB-supported Musicians in their own words series, the story is told through a mix of the performer's voice and music. There is no reporter's voice heard, allowing the feature to be seamlessly incorporated into station news, talk, or music programming. Scripts for intro and outro are attached, and may be edited at will. This piece works well pegged to local performances. Williams's tour schedule includes: 10/02 Pawling, NY, Towne Crier Cafe 10/03 New York, Battery Park 10/22 Ithaca, NY, Ithaca High School 10/23 Clinton, NY, Hamilton College 11/04 Charlottesville, VA Starr Hill 11/05 Easton, MD, Avalon Theatre 11/06 Harrisburg, PA Whitaker Center 11/19 Morristown, NJ Community Theatre 11/21 Stamford, CT Palace Theatre 12/02 Somerville, MA Somerville Theatre 12/03 New York, Bowery Ballroom 12/04 Glenside, PA Keswick Theatre
