Piece Description
Stan Freberg, who helped define radio comedy, the concept album, song parodies, and the world of advertising, will turn 80 years old on Tuesday, August 7th, 2006. In celebration of his birthday, award-winning radio producer Jeff Brown has produced a salute entitled, Happy Birthday Stan Freberg. The hour-long program features some of his most notable songs, selections from his concept albums, The United States of America, Volume One and Two, classic bits from his live radio show, and selections from his career in advertising. It also features commentary from June Foray (the voice behind Rocket J. Squirrel among hundreds of others), a frequent collaborator; Dr. Demento; David Ossman of the Firesign Theatre; and music historian Jeff Abraham. Review of Happy Birthday Stan Freberg!
A good retrospective of Freberg's career punctuated by some of his best pieces. Interviews with June Foray, David Ossman, and Dr. Demento provide a good timelime of his career and set him within the context of contemporary comedians.
