Piece Description
"The Blues Transformed" -- Innovative producers have taken the blues into new places, and in this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we listen to the results of these experiments, from the remixes of R. L. Burnside's Mississippi hill country blues by rock and hiphop producers to the recasting of field recordings made by Alan Lomax decades ago. Classical and art song settings are also applied to the blues by new artists such as Jubilant Sykes and Pyeng Threadgill. As far back as the late 1960s, Marshall Chess, son of one of the owners of the famed Chess label, took two of the label's best-known artists into new places musically, although even the artists questioned what he was doing. We'll hear a couple of his experiements with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf in this hour of the program as well.
