An amalgam of stories swirl around the portrait of a sound artist as a young listener: her memories and recollections collide with a passion to communicate with the long-dead, French madman, radio artist and Theater of Cruelty founder, Antonin Artaud. Layers of Artaud's final (1948) radio piece (a cacophony of screams and drumbeats) mixes with the sound artist's narratives of joyful eavesdropping, auditory overwhelm and the silence of voyeurism. A soundbed of whispers randomly voices ideas about the nature of aurality. The piece originally was designed as a 22-channel installation amidst 50 dangling, raw speakers in a darkened gallery space. (Hyperacousia is pronounced "hyper - uh - COOZSHA".)
