Piece Description
The program takes us back in time to July 10, 1938, and we listen to a memorial broadcast honoring George Gershwin on the eve of the first anniversary of his death. It features Jane Froman, Felix Knight, Sonny Schuyler and the Victor Salon Group, conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret. The program begins with a musically-illustrated biography of Gershwin in which we hear Al Jolson singing Gershwin's first hit, "Swanee," and an excerpt from Gershwin himself playing his "Rhapsody in Blue" with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. Review of Compact Discoveries 31: A Gershwin TributeThis is a terrific--and not even dated, although recorded in 1938--tribute to the great George Gershwin by Jane Froman, one of the foremost interpreters of his songs, the one chosen by Gershwin himself to introduce Summertime on the radio. I was delighted to listen to it on my computer and would be very pleased for the opportunity to hear it on the radio. |
