Guitarist and Songwriter Robbie Robertson?s came of age as rock music came of age to be the pre-eminent popular music of the late 20th Century. He's also a hell of a story teller. In this interview he talks about his early career.
At 16 Robertson became a professional musician in a band called The Hawks backing up rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. The Hawks went on to become Bob Dylan?s back up band in Dylan?s first world tour with an electric band in 1965 and 66. They were booed around the globe by folk music enthusiasts who thought Dylan was defiling music. But poetry of Dylan combined with the electric muscle of Robertson and the Hawks revolutionized rock music.
The Hawks became The Band with Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. They added their own chapter to rock history, what might be considered the beginning of the Americana.

Review of Robbie RobertsonAnd all The People Were Singing.... I love specials like this. I love musical Icons. I love being able to, credibly, brow beat my PD into listening to and airing these kinds of specials. He's going to read this review and close his door when he sees me coming! Because this hour does not disappoint! The story of the Band and Robbie's solo and multi faceted career is deep and hugely interesting. The interview with Robbie is fascinating. Hearing him tell the stories himself adds such a delightful level of interest. The trouble with interviewing stars though, is that they, like all of us, revert back in time and tend to ramble a bit. Since this is a live interview, it is a bit tough to edit "focus" into it. But no matter, all this time with Robbie will be a treat to listeners. The interview focuses a lot on the famous Dylan Go Electric period and that story alone is worth the listen. I'm not sure what?s what with the 51 min run time. It's not standardized and will require editing and filling. That's easy with these kind of pieces, but a producer supplied list of fill songs to time would be helpful. |

Review of Robbie Robertson
This is a really super introduction to the story of 'The Band' and its leading light-- an interesting, initimate, first-hand presentation that gives the listener a sense of how (arguably) the 'Americana' music thang got started. This program is, at its core, two very compelling interviews with Robbie Robertson sparsely narrated and sweetened with bursts of musical illustrations.
To be totally candid, I yearned for more music (whole songs would have been nice)--and, perhaps, someone broadcasting this special would be well served framing this hour with lots of great music from The Band, Dylan, et al. All in all, an hour well spent for those of us who love The Band and the musical movement it spawned.
