Description:
Even within his own lifetime Rembrandt enjoyed tremendous success, but his career had its ups and downs, and there is a stubborn romantic perception that he was a lonely, misunderstood genius. Later generations have tended to project their own aspirations and prejudices onto Rembrandt, perceiving him at times as a rebel, a Germanic hero, a proto-capitalist, and a Marxist pioneer.
In the second half of the program we speak with people whose lives are closely linked to the great Dutch Master: a copyist, a collector , an art dealer, and curators who are wondering whether our adulation of Rembrandt is not undermining our appreciation for other artists.
