Seventeen-year-old Krista Bell is a passionate cheerleader, she's graduating high school this year, and can't wait for her senior prom. But, unlike her girlfriends, Krista's world doesn't revolve around dresses, hair styles, and dates. Every day, she goes to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for chemotherapy treatment. Krista is battling her second bout with Ewing Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
Krista is one of 12,500 American children under 19 that are affected by cancer each year, and, from the moment of diagnosis, their lives are changed forever. In this one-hour-long radio documentary we follow three families affected by cancer and hear about their struggles, hopes, and fears. In addition to Krista, we'll meet 4-year-old Jaylen who has leukemia, and 3-year old Charlotte who is receiving treatment for tumors in her brain and along her spine. Each tell surprising stories of resilience, hope, love, and survival.
Host Maiken Scott speaks with the families and the healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses, social workers and psychologists, who care for these three children and hundreds like them. Childhood Lost and Found also explores the long-term effects on childhood cancer survivors, and the impact of healthcare disparities.
