Springtime and early summer means the harbor is teeming with herring? but rather than using them as bait, or pickling them, Emily Schwing discovered Petersburg?s own traditional use for the fish.

This year?s Little Norway Festival proved no different and no less fun than any other. From the style show, to the Kaffe Hus, and everything in between, the celebration was definitely as fun as ever. One lesser known tradition during the festival is the Herring Toss. If you Google the phrase Herring Toss, Petersburg comes up as the second hit, and it?s no surprise that it?s the Festival website. The post-parade activity is a delight for fans and competitors alike and this year, the competition was tough? and a little grossed out.
